Monday Meal Planning and When You Should Online Grocery Shop

It's been a while friends, and our budget (and my waistline) have felt it.  Have we really only been on summer vacation for one week?  Last week was a whirlwind, and going into this one, I have felt the need to buckle down and have a plan.

Harris Teeter online shopping to the rescue!

Carson, Camden, and I went to the grocery store on Tuesday night while Jonah was at baseball practice.  Want to know what ended up in our cart?  Doughnuts, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, and syrup.  Seriously.  Here's why it it pays to online shop, especially in the summer...

  • You avoid the sugary treats.  If I let Carson eat whatever he wanted at mealtime, he would have poptarts for breakfast, waffles for lunch, and doughnuts for dinner--followed by a bowl of ice cream for dessert.  By ordering online, you can order what YOU want for your family, not what your sweet-toothed children think they need.
  • You can save a TON of money.  I needed sour cream for the Greek Tostadas we are having this week.  When I typed sour cream into the search bar, I got this:
I was able to really think about how much sour cream I needed for the recipe, see what brand was on sale, and choose what was best for our budget.

  • You can make healthy, sensible decisions about what's on your menu for the week.  I had my calendar, my cookbooks, and my new Parents magazine (kid-friendly recipes included) all at my fingertips while I was planning out the week. It was easy to see what nights I would need meals, how many of us would be eating, and what I already had on hand, from the comfort of my desk.
  • That $4.95 service fee you pay for online shopping?  Trust me, you save that and more when you shop on your own without your children's "assistance."
So, what's on the menu for this week?

Monday
Greek Tostadas

Tuesday
Dinner out with Carson
Jonah will be at camp and I am taking Carson to his hockey lesson and plan to skate with him as well. Afterwards we are having a date.  Fun! Wonder where we should go?

Wednesday
Yum!  This is a delicious meal.  Anything pasta, and Camden's game.  Throw in some scrambled egg, cabbage and carrots and I'm game too.  The peanuts really top this recipe off.  We'll be adding this one to our rotation for sure!

Thursday
Friday
The boys have a birthday party, so they'll probably eat there.

Saturday and Sunday
Who knows?!  Jonah's state tournament starts this weekend, so we have no idea where we'll be at dinner time.

{And just a side note--I don't ALWAYS online shop.  There is value in taking the kids to the grocery story.  It's important for them to help do the grocery shopping and assist in choosing healthy foods.  90% of the time they do go to the grocery store with me.  But that other 10%, when we have a particularly busy week coming up and I feel the need to get back to eating healthy, online shopping is the way to go.}

What's for dinner at your house this week?
