The Power of Authentic Tasks...Date Night

A few weeks ago, Carson came to me and told me he and Jonah wanted to give us a date night.  He said he knew we didn't get to go out that much, and he wanted to be able to give us an in-house date.  I had no idea what those two had up their sleeves.  Here is how it played out.

They asked me to take them grocery shopping so I took them to Trader Joe's so they could buy the ingredients they needed.  Their restaurant was going to specialize in soups and sandwiches, so they built their shopping list around the entrees they would be offering.  They even wanted to buy items for appetizers.  Who was I to argue?

They hung these streamers in the doorway between the kitchen and the dining room.  They explained that they didn't want us to be able to see them cooking while we were enjoying our dinner.

When it was time for dinner, they led us to our table, which they had set, in the dining room.

Carson and Camden took our drink orders.

They also gave us our menus, which had been carefully typed and printed.  The name of their restaurant?  Souper Soup.  Taking after their daddy...the infamous "punner."

We placed our orders.

And they got busy in the kitchen.

Dinner was delicious!  And we decided we want to do this once a month.  Next month's theme is Mexican food.  Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Somehow, I still ended up doing the dishes at the end of our date.  Must have come up empty when it was time to pay the bill...

It was such a fun night, and cool to think about all the skills the boys learned while planning our date night.  Meal planning...finding their way around the kitchen...serving others...

I think I'd let them do this every night. :)

They also finally completed the printable I made them to review what they learned this summer as they've navigated our kitchen.  If you missed the post, Boys in the Kitchen, check it out.
