Boys in the Kitchen and a Free Printable

As the summer is drawing to a close (really? how did that happen?!), I find myself searching for things to do with my kids that involve using their brains.  And last week I was so excited to come up with an idea that encouraged teamwork, reading, math, and basic common sense.

It’s not rocket science.

I asked them to make one of their favorite treats.  Banana bread.  I happened to have some expiring bananas getting mushier by the minute so it was a win-win.

When I was out of town at the Haven blog conference, Justin really started working with the boys on taking more initiative around the house.  I came home to find them making their own breakfast, pouring their own milk, putting their dishes in the dishwasher.  It was awesome.

So, I decided to put their newfound independence into practice.  I gave them my mom’s recipe for banana bread and told them to get to work.  Thankfully, my pantry is still fairly intact from my recent pantry organization, so they were able to find the ingredients easily.  I had to stifle a laugh when I overheard them talking about finding the margarine, which they pronounced like it was a foreign country.

Jonah stopped enjoying cooking when he was about Camden’s age, but Carson has always loved to cook with me.  So, Carson sort of took the lead when it came to pulling out the flour and baking soda.  Jonah had to learn where we keep the mixing bowl, measuring spoons, and cups.  They both learned how to preheat the oven, and how to grease the baking pan.  The recipe calls for two eggs, so they each cracked one.

They really worked well together, and now they have a much better sense of how my kitchen works.  Jonah even mentioned having a greater respect for my cooking at the end of the process (in not so many words :).

We baked the bread and it was ready just in time for their Aunt Lauren and Cousin Greta’s arrival!

I realized later that it would have been fun to “test” their knowledge of the kitchen afterward, so I created this little kitchen quiz.  I kept it light and fun, being summer and all. :)

And if you'd like to test your own kitchen knowledge, I found this fun Kitchen Skills Quiz.

Don't forget to enter to win the Mommy Deserves Me Time giveaway if you haven't already.  The contest runs through the end of August.
